Harrison Hot Springs officials are considering a new volunteer recognition award.
During the new business portion of Jan. 17’s village council meeting, the council directed village staff to look into creating a nomination-based volunteer recognition program. Coun. Michie Vidal made the proposal.
The prospective local award sounds similar to the well-established Surrey Good Citizen of the Year Award, which recognizes individuals with outstanding community service and volunteer service records
In other council business:
- Council appointed election officers for the 2022 municipal election. Community services manager Rhonda Schell was appointed chief election officer with the power to appoint more officials as needed. Deputy CAO Debra Key was appointed deputy election officer.
“There’s extensive, detailed work involved; they will be putting in long hours on top of other duties,” said Coun. Samantha Piper, who attended the meeting remotely. “I would like to extend my gratitude to them for putting their names forward.”
Election Day for municipalities across B.C. is Saturday, Oct. 15.
- A few members of the public attended the council meeting via Zoom as the option was officially available again for the first time since October.
- Mayor Leo Facio thanked the village staff for putting in 12-hour shifts to help keep the streets clear during the heavy snowfall at the beginning of the month.
- Village councillors approved paying $3,000 for an annual subscription to the Alertable emergency notification system. The Alertable system works with subscribed local governments to deliver emergency alerts to landline, text, email and mobile app subscribers. Village officials reported more than 200 residents of Harrison Hot Springs subscriber to Alertable.
The next regular Harrison Hot Springs council meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at Memorial Hall. Online attendance via Zoom is also an option with instructions available at harrisonhotsprings.ca. Meetings are archived on the village’s YouTube page.
