Harrison River fire being fought aggressively

Wildfire Management says Harrison area fire is 40% contained

A forest fire burning in the steep hills along Harrison River was about 40 per cent contained Friday morning, according to fire officials.

The fire is estimated to be about three hectares, and is on side of Agassiz mountain opposite to the Village of Harrison Hot Springs. The fire is 4 km away from Harrison, on the southern side of the river, and north of Chehalis.

The fire is thought to have been caused by people in the area, and is under investigation.

There will be ongoing use of helicopter bucketing, the BC Wildfire Management office said Friday. The fire was reported early in the morning on Thursday, and several helicopters and an air tanker were dispatched to get the flames under control. The fire is burning dangerously close to BC Hydro wires, upgrading the small fire to an interface fire.

This also makes it a "fire of note" according to BC Wildfire Management standards, and is being monitored and reported on their website.

Access to the Harrison River is no longer restricted, as it was initially. The Campbell Lake trail, a popular hiking trail on Agassiz Mountain, was closed Thursday to keep hikers safe.

While smoke could be seen at the mouth of the Harrison River at Harrison Lake, smoke has not been a problem in the village itself.
