A training session on identifying potentially dangerous confined spaces and their hazards is being offered to Fraser Valley farmers and agricultural employers. The session is being held in Chilliwack next week, and is led by the Farm and Ranch Safety and Health Association (FARSHA).
Since 2000, 18 workers have lost their lives in confined spaces in B.C. in a number of industries including agriculture. Deaths and injuries in confined spaces are rare but can happen suddenly, often without warning that something is wrong, FARSHA said. Working in and cleaning feed bins, milk tanks, ventilation systems, pump sheds, fermentation tanks, silos and manure ponds can expose workers to toxic gases and other hazards that may be present. In high enough concentrations, they can cause death in seconds in enclosed spaces.
The Confined Space Employer Awareness Training is on Monday, June 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hampton Inn at 8050 Lickman Road. Lunch is provided.
