In Loving Memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Vernon Amrose Mellott on April 6, 2023, surrounded by his family.
"Vern" is survived by his loving wife of over 70 years, Inez; children Darrell (Diane), Sharon (Peter) and Teresa Leah (Morgan); grandchildren Jaime (John), Carla (Jim) and Ansel (Katie); and great-grandchildren Finlay, Rowan and Opal.
Vern was born on January 29, 1930, to Jerry and Marion Mellott and was raised in Colinton, Alberta. He met the love of his life, Inez, while working as a farm hand. They were married on April 9, 1952, and started their life together in Calmar, Alberta.
Vern went to Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) to learn to weld. He worked for a variety of construction and fabrication companies and owned and operated a portable welding rig. After Vern and Inez moved to an acreage east of Leduc, Vern sold the welding rig and took a position with a company that built overhead cranes and mining equipment. In 1971, he travelled to China to demonstrate an underground crane.
Vern and Inez raised their young family near Leduc, Alberta. Vern enjoyed camping trips with his family and volunteering for senior hockey, little league baseball and coaching girls' softball. He received a Canada Celebration 1988 medal in recognition of his volunteer work.
Vern was an avid bridge player and spent many hours honing his skills on the golf course.
In 1990, Vern retired at the age of 60, and they moved from Leduc to Agassiz to start a new chapter in their lives. They ran a lawn maintenance business for seven years before fully retiring and then participated in many activities and volunteered at the Old Age Pensioners' Friendship House in Agassiz.
Vern and Inez moved into Park Place Seniors Community in 2014, where they made many new friends. Vern loved roses and cared for the plants and shrubs on the property for many years. In his later years, Vern hung up the golf clubs and took up billiards.
Vern is predeceased by his brother Stanley (Marjorie), and sisters Ollene (Ray) and Geneva.
The family wishes to thank Jane and the staff at Park Place Seniors Community for their thoughtful care and concern, and the staff at the Chilliwack General Hospital for their heartfelt care and consideration of Vern and the family.
In keeping with Vern's wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crohn's and Colitis Canada - www.crohnsandcolitis.ca.
