Of all the special days, weeks and months in any given calendar year, some are more significant than others.

Cancer societies across the globe have declared November as MOvember - encouraging people to grow moustaches in support of cancer research - specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

That follows on the heels of October - Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

There are the light-hearted days like National Llama Day (Dec. 9), or National Hug a Newsperson Day (April 4), and outright silly days, such as Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day (Jan. 29), or World Nude Gardening Day (first Saturday in May).

And then, there are days that might make one stop and think, and perhaps throw some sunlight on someone.

This week is World Kindness Week, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

From the ongoing strife in the Middle East, and Ukraine, to the indifference or disdain being directed at our own homeless people right here in the Comox Valley, we could all do with a little more kindness - either receiving or giving.

It takes so little effort to be kind, it’s a wonder so many of us struggle to do so.

There is little we can do from the Comox Valley to have any kind of lasting effect in the Middle East, or Ukraine, but there is plenty we can do in our own community.

A smile and an acknowledgment as you pass others on the street. Checking on others’ well-being. Perhaps, if you are in a position to do so, keep a sandwich shop gift card or two in your pocket, for when you see someone in need.

Most of us are quick to judge. If we were to take that extra couple of seconds to imagine how someone in need got to that point, we may realize how fleeting good health and welfare is.

Choose kindness. This week, and every week.
