Christof Appel grinds out one stroke win at Chilliwack Men’s Open golf tournament

Appel was one of five golfers going down to the wire in the hugely competitive pro division

South African Christof Appel held off four rivals to claim top spot at last weekend’s Chilliwack Men’s Open Golf Tournament.

The two-round championship was played at the Chilliwack Golf Club, with 40 people teeing off in the pro division.

Appel fired a three-under-par 69 in the opening round, which left him in a tie for third, two strokes behind Zach Olson (Chilliwack Golf Club) and Kyle German (Bald Eagle Golf Club) and one stroke behind Bryce Barker (Vernon).

Barker faded badly in round two, shooting a two-over-par 74. German fired an even-par 72, and while Olson went one under with a 71, Appel ripped past him with a four-under-par 68.

At the end of round two, Olson was one of four golfers sitting one stroke back. The others were Cheam Mountain’s Kevin Stinson, Kelowna’s Cole Wilson and Chilliwack’s Jake Scarrow.

Appel pocketed the winner’s purse of $3,500 while the runners-up each took home $1,687.50.

Things were less suspenseful on the amateur side, where Fairview Mountain’s Cory Hilditch carded a total-gross 141, cruising to a four stroke win over Chilliwack’s Colin Holding.

One hundred and 48 golfers completed both rounds with Roger Gilhespy (Chilliwack Golf Club), Kerry Grittner (Cheam Mountain) and Brennan Walker (Chilliwack Golf Club) finding their way into the top 10.
