UFV’s Lauren Attieh, Gabrielle Attieh and Jonas Van Huizen were all named Canada West volleyball all-stars.

Three members of the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades volleyball program have been recognized as Canada West all-stars.

Women’s team members Gabrielle Attieh and Lauren Attieh, as well as men’s team member Jonas Van Huizen all received honours.

G. Attieh was named a first team all-star, while L. Attieh and Van Huizen were both second team all-stars.

G. Attieh, who was named CW and U Sports Player of the Year last season, returns as a first team all-star after leading the Cascades to an impressive 20-4 record. She placed top ten in many categories including kills, hitting percentage, service aces and digs.

She arrived to Abbotsford after already winning a pair of national titles with the UBC Thunderbirds (2017 and 2019) and then playing professionally in Europe over the pandemic. Part of the draw of coming to UFV was the opportunity to play with her two younger sisters Lauren Attieh and Talia Attieh.

L. Attieh placed eighth in the conference in kills and 15th in hitting percentage. The 5-10 outside hitter is in her second year with the Cascades and had a breakout season.

Her season highlight occurred on Feb. 2 when she had a game-high eight kills to help UFV sweep the TRU WolfPack in Abbotsford.

Van Huizen finished 11th in the conference in digs, 13th in the conference in kills and hitting percentage and 19th in assists. He was at or near the top in many statistical categories for the Cascades.

His season highlight occurred on Oct. 28 when he recorded 28 points and 24 kills against the Manitoba Bisons in Abbotsford.

The conference’s major award recipients will be announced next week in advance of the Canada West final.
